The tree is on the edge of Monken Hadley Common which is a small part of the former royal hunting grounds belonging to the Duchy of Lancaster and given to Queen Elizabeth l by her brother in 1547. The common was formed by the enclosures act at the end of the 18th century and was held by the Church Wardens for the use of the commoners until the Monken Hadley Common Trust was formed in 2022.
